star. party.
What is it?
A star party of course.
When is it?
August 31st. Astronomy will start in earnest about an hour after sun down, but we'll be doing some campfires and dinner before then. Bring food!
Where is it?
Knolls Recreation Area, about one hour fifteen minutes from SLC and right off I-80. A day pass is $10 dollars and can be purchased on your phone or via a cash envelope on site. While the Google Maps pin is accurate, there will also be a sign posted. (Assuming I'm allowed to do that..)
Will there be bathrooms? What about cell service?
Yes and yes! No running water, however.
What are we looking at?
I'll spend the night going between planets, star clusters, galaxies and nebulae! These won't look like pictures from Hubble, but you'll be seeing their light with your very own eyes!
What should I bring?
Be sure to bring a light jacket and a gallon of water, just in case. Also, food. If you're staying overnight, bring all the standard stuff you’d need to camp: tent, sleeping bag, lights, etc.
How late will we be up?
'Till we get tired or bored. If you intend to drive home instead of camping, please use your best judgement and leave when necessary.
What if it ends up being cloudy?
We’ll try our best to be nimble. Monday September 2nd is a holiday, so Sunday September 1st is our plan B. Alternatively, we could move to Friday August 30th.
